Planning to meet at the church? Please notify the office in advance with the date and time of your meeting. Not all bookings appear on the public calendar, so it’s important we’re aware to avoid conflicts.

Ministry leaders: please submit your annual ministry calendar to the office. We’ll make sure it gets added to the church calendar, available on both the website and the Bridge App. If you’re ever unsure of your meeting time, check the calendar—if we know about it, it will be listed!

Also, if you or your children have been in the building, please double-check that all windows are closed and fans, lights, and taps are turned off before leaving. Your help is much appreciated!

Offerings

The Counting Committee meets bi-weekly to process Sunday donations. Year-end donation receipts are prepared in the name of the giver and placed in your church mailbox.

If you do not need paper budget envelopes for 2026 let Irene know! Please email office@livinghopecrc.ca

Prayer Chain

Prayer chain messages are shared as requested. If you’d like to recognize a special birthday or anniversary—or if you have a personal or community prayer need—please email or call Irene at the office.

If you’re submitting a prayer request on behalf of someone else, kindly confirm with them first before reaching out.

Church Directory

Please help us keep the directory up to date! Send any updated contact information or photos to the office. You can view your listing through the Bridge App. If you don’t have access, Irene can provide a printed copy upon request.

Borrowing from the Church

Before borrowing any items from the church, please check with the office. Items may already be reserved or needed for upcoming ministry events. Once approved, be sure to use the sign-out sheet located on the kitchen pantry door.

Volunteering

Living Hope thrives because of its amazing volunteers—thank you! Ministry schedules are created quarterly, and we do our best to accommodate everyone’s availability.

If a scheduling conflict arises after the schedule is published, please inform your ministry leader and arrange for a replacement. If you’ve updated your availability to a “blackout date” after being scheduled, note that this won’t automatically assign a replacement—you’re still responsible for finding one.

If you submit your blackout dates before the schedule is created, we’ll do our best to work around them. Either way, please keep your ministry leader in the loop as well as they don’t see your black out dates.

Need to reach someone?

If you have ever visited southern Alberta, you might notice a number of very attractive church buildings belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon). The Mormons even have one of their oldest, and architecturally impressive temples in Cardston, just south of Lethbridge, that was built in 1913.

While living in Lethbridge, I worked for a company that was owned by a Mormon family, and most of my co-workers were Mormon. I found out that if you were Mormon, 10 percent of your wages were taken off your paycheck and sent directly to the church you attended; they took tithing very seriously!

The idea of a tithe is not supposed to be a legalistic requirement. A tithe is a returning to the Lord a portion of what is His, and the 10 percent is a guideline. For some people that may be too much, and for others, not nearly enough.

I mention all of this because Living Hope operates based on the financial gifts of its members, and our collective giving is how our staff get paid, our facilities are managed, and our programs are run.

As of the end of July, we were approximately 60 percent of the way through this year, and we have collected about 41 percent of our budget. Put another way, we are approximately 20 percent short of where we should be at this point in the year.

To meet our budget, we should be collecting just over $54,000 per month. So far this year, we have averaged about $38,000 per month.

To fully meet our budget, we will need to give another $361,000 by the end of the year. That is $72,000 per month (which is almost double what our average monthly giving has been so far this year).

Our current pattern of giving is similar to other years for our congregation. For example, we were facing a substantial budget shortfall last year, and our membership responded by contributing an incredible amount in December. While we are grateful to God for the gifts of His people, it is very difficult for our church to operate this way.

There is a challenge in this for all of us. Can we be more intentional about giving in the next few months so that we can avoid the last-minute call to give in order to meet our budget expectations? I am not suggesting we garner ten percent from everyone’s wages and give it directly to the church like the Mormons of Southern Alberta (though the impact of that kind of giving would be amazing!). That type of forced giving takes the joy and intentionality out of something that is supposed to be celebratory worship. I am challenging all of us to be mindful of where we are at and respond in joyful, intentional giving.

It is almost universal among people under age 64; 72% of people 65 and older use it in some capacity.

The worldwide web has had a significant impact on humanity and is not going away. Now, the way in which social media has become integrated into everyday life, from politics to business to entertainment to family dynamics, means that we are often forced to engage with it. It has altered the way in which we perceive our fellow humans, and the way in which we interact with each other. If there is no going back to a pre-internet world, what is our way forward?

I am frequently confronted with this wrestling about social media in my ministry with children, youth, and young adults. It leads me to wonder about how to interact with social media, both as an individual and as a church community. You may have noticed in recent years that our online presence has not grown but rather stayed very simple. It can be tempting to look at other churches and be envious of their social media. What are the advantages and disadvantages of investing time, energy, and skills investment in social media and how does (or doesn’t) it fit into Living Hope’s mission and vision for a flourishing community of believers?

Investing our time and energy in social media gives it a certain credibility. By posting to online spaces, we are inviting members of our community to be in those spaces and looking for people already online. If we are going to be online, and give it credibility as a space to inhabit, what are the positives and negatives of our engagement?

What are the advantages? Increased connectivity has been an incredible advantage of social media! We have never been more connected before. The ability to have real time connection with friends and family around the world is wondrous. Think about the generations of families that immigrated to new countries for better opportunities, and the sadness that accompanied the feeling of permanent separation would bring to all. Now, we can video call and send photos instantly to share the big moments of life! This increased connectivity extends into church. Hosting our church services live on YouTube allows everyone in our community to tune in, even when they are sick, on holidays, or no longer able to easily leave their homes.

Social media also allows us to reach out to other church communities across the world. We can see numerous unique expressions of the kingdom of God! We can hear new worship songs, listen to different preaching styles, explore new artwork, be inspired by unique outreach! Social media can fuel our creativity by reimagining our own community in its context. It can also help us find people with similar interests, facilitating community building.

What about the disadvantages? Overwhelmingly, despite the widespread usage of social media, people are concerned about negative impacts on people, especially children and teenagers. Increased usage of social media can lead to isolation, loneliness, poor mental health, and cyberbullying. This is prevalent among “intense” users of social media on their smartphones, who check their phones every 30 minutes. This is correlated with age, with 44% of social media users aged 15 to 29 identified as intense smartphone users compared with 18% of those aged 50 to 64 (Source: StatsCanada). The times spent on phones and social media begins to replace physically connecting with other people. It is important to note that in the research, there is a difference between active and passive users. Active users are creating and posting content, while maintaining more consistent engagement with other users. Passive users simply consume content, without much activity. Passive use is seen to correlate more with the negative effects of social media. The way we engage with social media is as important to consider as the actual media itself.

We saw the intensity of this discussion play out at Synod this year. The report from the Virtual Church Task Force wrestled with the potential and limits of community in online spaces (Agenda for Synod 2025, p.311). It was clear from the report and discussion at Synod that opinions were divided on how the church can and should exist in online spaces. What was also clear was the universal emphasis on the importance of moving towards embodied worship and relationships.

Regardless of how one uses social media, the dangers are still prevalent. The gospel offers and alternative to the loneliness that comes with intense use. The gospel invites people to see the gift of salvation as coming with a community. Paul tells us that “in love, [God] predestined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). Salvation is not just about our personal status with God. When we are saved, we are also adopted in a new family – the people of God! Throughout the whole of scripture, a relationship with God leads to a relationship with others. God never calls his children into a life of isolation or independence; it is always to join with others. Part of our work of witnessing is to bring people into community. If we choose to witness in online spaces, the end goal is the same.

At Living Hope, we don’t have a flashy online presence. It is consistent and the primary focus is to invite people into our church community. As we continue to wrestle with the best way to engage with social media, we must remember to be driven by the goal of intentional and personal community. Social media can be an easy space to make initial connections, a low barrier space to check out community to see what the church is all about. We will continue to exist in the online spaces, because that is where people are. But the direction that our social media presence should take, is to go out so that we can gather people into a personal relationship with the people of God.

One of my favourite practices as new members join council is starting our council orientation with this question: What is a memory that typifies Living Hope to you? I like hearing not just about the qualities of Living Hope but the stories that each person has which made this place feel more like home.

An overwhelming theme that comes through about Living Hope was the sense of family. I’ve heard stories of being cared for in sickness, meals prepared, wheelchairs or medical equipment purchased, people going above and beyond for helping with rehabilitation, or simply receiving a welcome and connection in church where in the past they felt lost amongst the crowd. These are the types of stories that leaders of Living Hope tell when they come, excited to be part of the leadership of the church. I often leave the meetings with a sense that God has truly gifted Living Hope with this sense of community and family.

One person even referenced the Vinyl Café, the classic Stewart McLean stories named after a small record shop that embraced being warm and inviting. Its slogan was, ‘We’re not big but we’re small’ — and they said Living Hope is like that. We don’t compete with the big-box style churches in size or polish. Instead, we embrace being a community where it’s harder to get lost and where people can truly be known. The question that stayed with me after the quote was stated was: What would it mean to lean into that aspect of our church?

The shadow side of having ‘being known’ as a marker of strength, is that when people slip through the cracks it is not just that they miss out on an aspect of the church, but they miss out on something crucial to our identity. Sadly, I’ve heard responses from people who have left and gone to other churches over the years that they never felt welcome or that they never totally fit in. Some expressed this in saying that they wonder if they were missed because they weren’t contacted when they left. These stories highlight just how important this aspect of being known in community is. Not only is it often highlighted by our leaders when it’s practiced well, but its absence is lamented by those who leave.

We will never do this perfectly, but it would be a shame if we didn’t take anything from these critiques. Over the past few years in listening to people, a characteristic that really shines through about Living Hope is that we are a church where it is possible to be known — where great love and care have been shown. And it is vital that we keep on kindling that rich gift that God has given Living Hope. It also should spur us into thinking of how we can improve in our welcome and belonging. It should encourage us into thinking of how those who are newer in our community find that belonging and ‘being known’ that is central to identity that God has blessed Living Hope with. And the wonderful thing is, each of us are invited into this. Each of us has a part to play in helping Living Hope be the kind of family God has called us to be – where people are not just welcomed but truly known and loved.

Just in this last year as the interim coordinator, I have learned so much and gained a newfound appreciation for worship from a reformed perspective as I designed services, wrote liturgies, and collaborated with our worship leaders and staff on various events.

There are so many highlights from the last year that I want to continue to learn from and build off.

Last September I did a book study with Pastor Steve reading You Are What You Love by James K. Smith. It looks at how we need to be constantly re-calibrating our hearts and desires as this is what forms us. We do this through liturgies, or in other words, habits. This has been a great foundation for me in appreciating how worship forms us into our weeks. It also was a great read to start out with as the worship coordinator. Every week, as I plan the service, I dive into scripture, look at different readings, and go through hymn books; I feel as though I am consistently surrounded by the services liturgy that it has, as Smith says, re-calibrated my heart in beautiful and transforming ways. I look forward to how this will continue to grow in the future. As a bonus: I believe this book is in our library if you want to take a look at it! It’s an easy read and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it if you do pick it up.

Another highlight comes from my favourite season in the church calendar: Lent and Easter. It naturally lends itself to be reflective and melancholy. It’s dark, gloomy, then suddenly, with Easter, it’s so incredibly joyous and celebratory. As I was looking at planning Easter weekend, I wanted to create spaces that reflected these moods. So with a lot of designing, writing, and dreaming; using resources I found in Reformed Worship (a fantastic magazine focusing on worship services that I use frequently for ideas and inspiration), I planned three services that we, as a congregation, could participate in together. A particular highlight was Saturday, the Walking With Jesus event where we took time to come into a space of quietness and go through the different stations on the way to the cross. I’m looking forward to future years of how we can intentionally set aside time to prepare ourselves for Easter joy.

In between all these major events and services, there are many behind the scenes things that happen on a week-to-week basis. Working with staff on different projects has been great, and I look forward to more of this happening as our team is so well rounded which enables us to do more creative projects together. I also love meeting regularly with our amazing worship leaders who I get to learn from and pass on whatever I’ve been learning to them. We have amazing discussions about worship and worship specifically at Living Hope. It’s been such a privilege to get to know them more.

Lastly, I want to let you know about a project I’m starting during my maternity leave. I’ve just begun a year-long certificate in Music Fundamentals for Worship. This will give me time to grow in my understanding of the basics in music. The four courses will focus on music theory specifically in worship music, music leadership for choirs and bands, worship technology and production, and building a music and worship ministry. I found this course through Thrive, a CRC ministry aimed for equipping the church. It is great to be part of a denomination that supports leaders and they even gave me a grant to pay for part of the tuition. It feels a little odd to be back in school again, but it’s also great timing for me as I’ll be at home with our new baby, Nell, a lot these next few months instead of in the office. I’m looking forward to what it teaches me and how I can apply what I’m learning once I’m back.

I’m proud of the worship ministry we have here at Living Hope, and I’m excited to get back into things more regularly again.

One of their concerns about their current church was the lack of a youth program. Their daughter is two years old. While they are over 10 years away from sending her to a youth group, the fact that their church doesn’t have one creates a point of concern. This highlights a feeling that people across generations have about their church. The overwhelming mood in the church (particularly in North America and Europe) is that youth ministry is important, a necessity for a church. Why is that?

As I have settled into my role here at Living Hope, this has been part of my wondering. Why is everyone so obsessed with youth and youthfulness? It is not a difficult task to come up with the most common thoughts about the importance of youth and youth ministry. Young people are the future of the church. We need to keep young people in the church. Youth group is a place to build relationships other Christian youth. The youth learn lessons and build faith that will sustain them when they go away for school or enter a non-Christian workforce.

My issue with many of these answers is that they are born out of a scarcity mindset, the fear that there will not be enough youth with faith to keep the church going. We can see how a scarcity mindset has affected the approach of so much of Youth Ministry. Youth groups have adopted an attractional model, being focused on getting the youth to attend. The prevailing thought would be that if they came to youth group, then they will have faith. Attendance = faith in Jesus. In this model, the job of the youth pastor became centered on cultivating consistent attendance to youth group. But as a familiar saying goes, “sitting in your garage doesn’t make you a car”. Spending time in community with other Christians is important, but it cannot be the sure marker for faith or the only means of formation.

All of this invites the question: is there a better way? What is the point of youth ministry and are there better reasons to care about it?

Andrew Root (yes, this guy again) offers up some suggestions in his books Faith Formation in a Secular Age and The End of Youth Ministry?

He suggests that to understand what the purpose of youth ministry is, we need to examine why it has come to occupy such a large portion of church budgets and mental space. It can be presented simply (of course it is more complex than what I am about to say). The presence of youth (and young adults) in your church indicates that your church is relevant. Youth have decided what is relevant in our society since the 1960’s. Think about how much advertising space is dedicated to youth or to helping parents care for their youth. We can see that played out in the way churches must continue to adapt to whatever the trendiest social media apps are. Churches chase after this youthful spirit, again out of fear, that if they cannot maintain their attraction to youth, then the youth will go to the hip church down the road. To a degree, this is true. A church like ours cannot compete with a church that has a million-dollar budget. They will have a better social media presence, more exciting events, and be able to attract a larger crowd leading to a snowballing effect on attendance. This is going to sound cruel, but the presence of youth becomes more important than the actual person. It doesn’t matter who they are, it just matters that they are there and visible so that the church can claim relevance and vitality. People are content to sit on the outside of the lives of the youth, feeling grateful for the few staff and volunteers that participate in youth ministry, believing that is enough, or believing that we are not ‘youthful’ enough for the youth to want to spend time with us.

What can we do to change our thinking?

Instead of trying to make of youth program “youthful” so that it is attractive and hip, Root pushes people to think about it in a different way. His conclusion is that youth groups exist for joy. The means of cultivating joy as a group comes from sharing stories together. Story reveals something of ourselves to others and invites them to connect with us on a deeper level. Joy is the driving force behind youth ministry because Joy is the experience of the inner being of the triune God. Joy is not about a good feeling, or an uplifting story, but of what it means to dwell in the presence of the Trinity, even in the worst of circumstances. It moves beyond a youth-attendance based model of ministry, and digs down to a God-centered model facilitated through relationship.

Youth Ministry, a place to cultivate joy, becomes centered on the story of scripture and the way that story plays out in our lives. Youth Ministry becomes a place where the youth should encounter God and be formed by dwelling in his presence. This kind of youth group is not going to make any headlines for being innovative because it is setting aside innovation in favour of being together, in prayer, scripture, and story for the purpose of joy. It means that a vibrant youth group is not the responsibility of the youth pastor or the budget they must work with. It is about the people from the congregation that come out to spend time with the youth and sharing their experience of dwelling with God, their experience of joy. At its best, my role is to facilitate a time where these stories of joy can be shared.

Youth ministry extends far beyond our meetings on Thursday nights. It means that every interaction you have with youth, it a chance to share your story of experiencing the joy of God.

Just under half of the giving at Living Hope goes into making sure ministries can run. This includes our Sunday Services, Youth, GEMS and Cadets, Young at Heart, Bible Studies and more! Much of these costs can stay so low because of the creative work of our volunteers. We are so grateful for the hours people put in to see ministries that help both children and adults grow in who they are in Christ!

BUILDING | 16 cents (maintenance, facilities/operations, and debt serving)

We can run many of our ministries because we have a building and the maintenance of this is only 16 cents of every dollar. A portion of the building costs is debt repayment, as we are still financing the sanctuary renovation and parking lot update. What a gift it is to have a well cared for building – allowing our ministries to run and also communicating to our community that we are a hopeful people who love the place that we are in.

SPECIAL CAUSES | 36 cents (missionaries, global & local)

Over a third of our giving is devoted towards ministries that are outside of our church walls. We are a church that gives generously to the varied organizations that we support both locally and globally. Over half of our giving goes towards local causes (within BC) with over one third going to global causes and just under a tenth going to our missionaries.

We offer opportunities for people of all ages to get connected into the Living Hope community beyond the Sunday morning service — whether that’s through attending or volunteering. Check out all the exciting ministries happening this year!

INFANT/TODDLER MINISTRY

The infant and toddler nurseries minister to families with children by providing childcare during the Sunday service to anyone who would like it. Volunteers care for and play with the children and teach simple bible lessons to those that are preschool aged. Being involved with this ministry is a great way to connect with and get to know other people in our church community!

If you love to take care of and interact with the youngest generation, they’d love to have you join their team of volunteers!

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School provides childcare for children ages 4 to Grade 3 during part of the Sunday morning service where the kids learn more about God through song, lessons and crafts.

Sunday School is looking for people to help with song leading and piano playing. If you are interested in either, or both, please contact sundayschool@livinghopecrc.ca. There is also space to teach for one month on and two months off from September to May.

CADETS

Our Cadets ministry is a club for boys in grades 3-7. They are given the opportunity to grow in a relationship with Jesus Christ, with peers, and with adult leaders. They do Bible studies, projects, and have special outings! Stay tuned for more about when this ministry will kick-off in October!

GEMS

GEMS is a girls club for grades 3-7. They meet on Tuesday nights (approximately every other week) from October to April for a night of fun and learning about God’s will in their lives. This year their curriculum focuses on the book of Esther.

Ladies, would you consider volunteering to teach GEMS? They need adult women as well as high-school-aged leaders. You do not need to be crafty to be a GEMS leader, you just need to connect with the girls and get to know them! If you can’t commit to a full-time leader, they would love to have you share your special talents. Some amazing special events over the years have included guided painting, candle making, macaroni shoe art, hiking, canoeing and print making. Contact Janice to volunteer or if you have questions: gems@livinghopecrc.ca

YOUTH

Do you enjoy planning special events and service opportunities for youth? We are looking for a few more people to join the Living Hope Youth group leadership. The only qualification is a heart to learn and connect with the youth. Please reach out to Pastor Ben if you would like more details on ways you could be involved.

YOUNG ADULTS

Young Adults is just beginning. If you are a young adult (post high school) looking to be part of this group, please contact Pastor Ben.

SMALL GROUPS

We have resources in our library – searchable online. If you need help finding material or if you’d like to be part of one – please contact Pastor Ben.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY

Keep September 19 at 9:30am free for our first Bible Study! As requested, we are studying God’s creation plan for women, using some of the stories of the lives of women in the Bible.

COFFEE BREAK

Coffee break is a time for ladies of all ages to get together, share a treat, laughter, tears, frustrations, encouragement, wisdom, and joy together. A time where God’s beautiful daughters are able to learn more about Him and His all-powerful, omnipotent, healing love for us. We are able to do this with the blessing of ladies caring for our in Story Hour.

If this is something you and/or a friend may wish to take part in, please join us starting September 20 every Wednesday from 9:30-11am. We would love to have you!

WOMEN’S CONNECTIONS

We are hoping to plan an event in the fall and would love your input on (a) what kind of event, and (b) when is best.

Mark your calendars: Living Hope and several other CRC churches are planning a Women’s Conference on April 12 & 13, 2024. It will be a time of learning, fellowship, worship, various break-out sessions and food! Grace Fox will be speaking on “In Love With the Good Shepherd” based on Psalm 23. Registration will come out early in the new year!

MEN’S MINISTRY

This ministry is for ALL men over the age of 18. Typically, we meet once a month to connect and socialize in a very relaxed setting at someone’s home. We also will occasionally organize fun outings and service projects. It’s a terrific way to get to know other men from the congregation and build friendships and community. Check the website and watch the weekly announcements for our next event! Ask Grant Notenbomer for more details.

YOUNG AT HEART | SENIORS

Our new season will start on Thursday, October 19 at 10am. Everyone over 60 is welcome to join us. Wanted from you: Ideas for presentations, musical numbers, activities, etc. for our monthly gatherings. Perhaps you would consider presenting something? Please let Ria, Sue or Al know. We need your ideas!

id the series title catch your attention? It certainly did the first time I heard it: “Shouldn’t it read A Man After God’s Own Heart?” I mean, that’s what I’ve been taught. So often King David has been looked at as a moral example, as a person who through his passion and zeal for God’s heart, paves the way forward for faithfulness for future generations. We could make the mistake in thinking David is the example that we are meant to follow, a story full of useful tips in how to be a better person, so we too can raise our David’s and slay our giants.

But looking at David’s life, we find that his life also includes a lot of messiness. We will see that David isn’t the example to follow, but that there is something more going on in the story directing us towards God. We’ll be reading with our eyes attended to what this story has to teach us about God and how it anticipates Jesus – rather than just providing us with a broken example to follow.

As we lead up to the series, your invited to read the stories of King David yourself – especially as it is recorded in 1 and 2 Samuel. If you read it ahead of time, come to Pastor Steve (or Ben) with your questions or insights. I’d love to hear what you think of these stories as we dive into the life of David.
