How often do you think about sin? For some of us, it is an unhealthy obsession. We can fixate on particular sins and wallow in our own guilt. For others, we try to play it off as not so bad. We hardly give it a second thought. Sin can be a notoriously challenging subject to approach because of the baggage or different assumptions that people hold about what sin is.

In light of that, this Lent, we will be doing a series called ‘The Remedy to Sin.’ Focusing in on the 7 Deadly Sins and the remedy in Christ. In this series we will have a look at how sin is not just the actions we do – but involves the orientation of our hearts and our distorted desires and loves. Often, in looking at particular sins, we can miss the deeper causes. By focusing on the end results, we miss that sin has been crouching within ourselves for a long time, festering and waiting for its expression.

The thing about sin is, it starts somewhere. I think this is the aspect that stood out to me last time I did a deep dive in the 7 deadly sins. These 7 were not distilled in the ancient church because they were absolute worst things that you can do. No, they are the places where sin begins. They are the places where we begin, in our own pride, to look inwardly instead of towards God. In order to uproot sin in our lives, we need to not only see the end results – we need to go to the very places where they originate.

Sometimes it is helpful to take an extra close look at sin, so we know how we can spot it in our own lives, and so we can know how to rid ourselves of it. And what better time to do this than during Lent? Lent is the season where we journey towards the cross – a time of internal inspection – looking at what it is we have to shed. In the words of the Seeking God’s Face devotional, “It is a somber journey of spiritual preparation and renewal, marked especially be repentance and prayer. In our pain-averse culture, Lent stands apart by not shrinking away from suffering but cultivating in us wisdom that growth often (some might say only) comes through suffering.” Sometimes we shy away from sin, not wanting to face the ugly reality of it in our lives. But in order for us to mark seasons of renewal – we need to be willing to take a long hard look at the dark places within us. We need to be able to see these parts of us that are causing brokenness and put an end to it. This is a painful process, it involves suffering, but this is the way towards growth.

This sort of change doesn’t happen overnight. By identifying the deepest parts of our being, we are identifying things that we can’t simply choose to stop doing. Envy seems to come from within, lust can seem like an inescapable reality, anger just flares up. If it was as simple as willing these things away, we’d be done with them a long time ago. In our series we will see how Jesus not only does the work of offering freedom from the penalty of sin, he also gives a way to the remedy of sin in our lives. He offers ways that we transform ourselves – that we can be agents of resistance and healing in a world of decay and hurt.

The 7 Deadly Sins are listed as: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth. Which of these do you need to attend to in your own life? Are there any that don’t seem so bad or feel misunderstood? Take time to reflect on these as we look to focusing on this in the New Year.

n June 15, 2024, members of Living Hope and Gateway set out to love and serve the city that they live in. It was an opportunity to do something we haven’t done in a while, partner between churches in Abbotsford to show that we are people of the same kingdom, working together. Through stormy weather, serving hands from different churches sought to be salt and light as they removed invasive weeds in local parks, did clean-up for those impacted by the flood, and helped with landscaping projects in our partner organizations. We even had a crew cutting vegetables at our local Gleaners, who prepared soup mix in areas in the world were relief work is needed. The day finished with the groups coming back together and sharing a meal with each other. It was a gift to sit with people who served in varied areas in the city, swapping stories, and enjoying new connections made between churches. This year we are planning on doing this for a second year! This time around, Living Hope will be providing team leaders and hosting a few of our own service projects as we look to team up with Gateway once again in serving the city together. If you are interested in being a crew leader, let Pastor Steve know!

What was it like volunteering?

A note from an Invasive Species Removal Group

The crews serving with invasive weeds got to learn how stubborn ivy can be! This invasive species really glues itself to trees and weaves its way through the undergrowth in the forest, preventing anything else from being able to thrive. We also learned how quickly we could remove sections of this when we all worked together. While just a couple people would hardly make a dent, having a crew of 20 or so people meant that we really got to see our progress. Kids, young adults, parents and grandparents all worked alongside each other as we helped the plants and trees breath as we removed the ivy. Working outside felt like one continuous downpour and we joked that it would lighten up as soon as we finished for the day. Sure enough, as some warm coffee and hot chocolate arrived to signal the end of our day – the first glimpse of sunlight started poking through the clouds enabling us to warm up from some chilly hours of serving. We enjoyed coffee and conversation with our new

A story of God’s Provision

As we partnered with Gateway on this, we wanted to contribute financially to some of the costs. Unaware of the total budget and funds available, the deacons decided on a number. On the morning of the event, Gary Veeneman delivered a cheque on behalf of Living Hope. It turned out that the cheque was exactly the amount that was needed to cover the remainder of the costs for the service opportunities. Praise be to God for the way he works in answering prayers and giving us glimpses into the variety of ways he is at work behind the scenes!

An onset of acute illness as a teenager left me with lasting chronic illness, characterized by a lot of pain and fatigue. Over the past couple decades different diagnoses were layered upon each other, and it’s taken a lot of hard emotional and spiritual work to come to an understanding that my body is not working against me, but rather trying to tell me something and keep me safe. A recent study of The Wisdom of Your Body by Hillary McBride with my book club forced me to confront a lot of what I continued to push to the side – that I am my body and my body is me. Poetry is one way that I am able to express myself and find healing in that expression. As we enter into Lent, may you find healing and wholeness in the knowledge that Christ became flesh, just as you are flesh, and that your body is good, because it is where you reside.

A world that says
you’re too old
or too young
not pretty enough
not strong enough
you don’t fit in enough
to keep up with what
the world
demands.

So you try to change your body,
or push it aside.
Mind over matter.
Body doesn’t matter.
Strive for more
produce more
ignore the pleas
of a body
that needs
rest.

Where is the breaking point?
Because this is unsustainable
and ideals are unattainable.
And did you ever stop
to consider that
maybe
all your body wants
is to be
your
friend?

Breathe.
Start with the breath.
Inhale the mystery
spanning all of human history
of bodies
created
animated
by the One
who made
everything.

Delighting in humans,
He called us very good.
When did we lose the connection
that we are a reflection
of the Creator
who became flesh
and lived as humans do?
God, a Living,
Breathing
Body.

So,
run your hands through warm sand.
Eat foods that make your taste buds sing.
Dance wildly to music that fills your soul with laughter.

And,
cling to those you love.
Weep when sorrow overwhelms you.
Yell, stomp, and protest when it’s all too much to bear.

So,
delight,
rejoice,
revel,
in being here
alive.

And,
when you can’t,
(because sometimes you can’t)
then simply
keep breathing,
being,
bearing witness
to all that it means
to be at home
in a
body.

Many books have been written on prayer, and many methods we can use to pray have been suggested as they teach us how to pray. Praying is so unique to the individual and can be as natural as breathing, and as simple as talking to a good friend. It is not a serious chore, something to fit in between the busy schedules of life. It is not a performance, practiced to create beautiful phrases. It is not a wish list for God to supply.

Prayer is many things: Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, Intercession, Meditation and more. Simply put, prayer is being in the presence of a loving God; it is listening to what He has to say and sharing your heart with Him. Prayer is a gift from God to His children. Connecting with our God fills our deepest need, our strongest longing. It is, for us broken and redeemed sinners, to stand before the Great “I AM”, knowing His mercy, His love, and His daily care. Prayer raises our sights beyond our own limitations to the beauty and vastness of our Sovereign God who desires to be in communion with us. God knows our deepest needs well before we ask Him, and answers our prayers in His wisdom, His way.

It takes courage to come before Him with our pain, our doubts, our complaints, our shame, and our regret. We come before Him with our praise, our thanksgiving, our blessings. We come! He hears! He loves! Prayer is cultivating a deep life-changing relationship with our Living Lord. What an amazing privilege it is to pray. It takes courage and commitment to live in communion with God. Prayer is “the chief part of thankfulness”. (Heidelberg Catechism).

During this season of Lent, when we remember the price Jesus paid so we can be in intimate communication with God, our prayers reflect our deepest thankfulness.

My mother led a Bible study for many years. It was called, “Ora et Labora” or “Pray and Work”. She taught me that we pray when we say “Amen” and rest in the knowledge that God holds us, and He knows everything we need. Then we go and do the work He has gifted us to do – to bless others and glorify Him. The theologian named Spurgeon said, “Pray to God, and keep the hammer going”. “Ora et Labora”.

This spring we are inviting you to bring your questions and your wonderings to us and your feedback will help compose our summer series: You Asked For It.

Often in the planning of series for an upcoming year, it comes with the prayer and discernment of the pastors and discussions with council. And now you have an opportunity to bring your questions and input! In a way, this series comes because you are already asking. Some of you have brought suggestions already, whether it is through wonderings in a visit or a suggestion on a Sunday morning, I’ve appreciated the different questions out there and I know there must be more. So here’s an opportunity to formally bring your ideas and questions.

Submit your ideas by filling out this form: https://livinghopecrc.breezechms.com/form/you-asked-for-it-series

Why were we doing this? Because we had just watched heroes do these different moves and now, we wanted to be like our heroes. The idea behind this all is, we end up trying to be like the people we admire.

Imitating what you admire isn’t always painful. Sometimes it is a good thing. Maybe you know a more delicious version of this. For instance, I had a phase in my life where I made soup and buns on Sunday afternoons because people I admired did this.

Whatever the case is, both speak of something central that is hardwired into humanity: we imitate what we love. Or in religious terms: we become what we worship.

This is especially important when we get to our understanding of who God is:

If your version of God is all judgement, then you’ll mirror that in how you act towards others.

If your version of God is all love and light on truth, then odds are you will become light on truth.

If you see God only as a mighty warrior, then you may try rule with an iron fist.

If you see God as the giver of grace, then your graciousness will expand day by day.

Notice, our view of God is important in how we behave. This can be good or bad, to our ruin or our restoration. And the thing is, our view of God can easily be distorted. Often we start worshiping other things instead of God without even realizing it. We distort our picture of God to suit our needs. And then we start looking like that. There is a special word in the Old Testament that talks about the things that we worship that are not God. It calls it idolatry. Idolatry is when we find our hearts longing for the wrong things. Idolatry is a word that is all about desire, what do we truly love? Who do we trust?

To start Lent, we are going to look at the different forms of idolatry in our day and how we are called to rid ourselves of these things. Rather than giving up something like coffee (you can do that too), we are going to look inward and see if there are any idolatrous ideas or practices that have developed in our lives. The goal is that as we look towards Easter, we can lay these things before the cross and grow in greater imitation of God as he reveals himself to us. After all: we become like what we worship.

“Matthew Captures Greatest Sermon Ever Preached.”

If I was in charge of the newspaper on the day Matthew’s Gospel was published – that would have been on my shortlist of headlines. Matthew’s gospel is phenomenal in many ways, but chapters 5-7 take a unique place in it. They capture a vast amount of Jesus’ teachings and some of the most pointed challenges to Christian living all in just a few chapters of Scripture.

From Easter until early July, we will be exploring these words of Jesus and seeing where his sermon still speaks to us today, and you are invited to get a head start on it! Read these words and be challenged by them in their face value. Read these words in different translations – find ways of having these words land on our ears in fresh ways. Whether it is listening to an audio recording of scripture, reading it on your device, or in printed Bible – find a way to read what might be the greatest sermon ever preached as we start our new series.

This past year, after a significant shortfall three quarters into the year, we made our budget. This prompted us to singing in Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow – acapella – in the service. It was fitting response of praise to God for how he has blessed us. While this song normally fits at the end of a service as a parting blessing, it is particularly well suited in response to our offerings as we give out of gratitude for the goodness that God has done. That is always the setting for our giving and why we keep our giving as part of our worship services and not something we simply tack on at the end or add as a separate task to do on our own.

However, something has changed in the past few years that removes giving from our time of worship: digital giving. While automatic withdrawals have been a thing for decades, the prominence of online giving over the past few years has been another thing all together. Looking at our totals, nearly 50% of giving was digital. While we recognize this is fitting, as much of our financial dealings happen digitally these days – we also recognize something significant gets lost. Unless people are pressing the ‘donate now’ button during the offertory song on Sunday, giving is no longer situated as part of our worship service. The solution is not to ban online giving but, instead, to think of ways of emphasizing giving as an act of worship.

One thing that we want to try in this upcoming season, is a Commitment Card. This card does not represent a certain dollar amount or anything like that. It is simply a card that can be placed in the offering basket during our offering as a physical reminder that the digital giving done earlier this week was part of our worship. The purpose of this is not so that we can see who is giving and who isn’t – it is giving an opportunity to recover giving in its proper place of worship – praise God to whom all blessings flow!

Reminder | First Fruits

The temptation with giving digitally or through PAR (Pre-Authorized Remittance) is to ‘set it and forget it.’ This can happen in our routines where we just give the amount we always give. Last October, Pastor Steve talked about this in terms of “First Fruits” in his sermon. Now, as we enter a new year, we get the chance to practice first fruits giving. What does it mean to be intentional in what your give and how much you give at the start of the year – offering what you have in worship before God?

We met at our monthly meeting in January and discussed and created a new Benevolence Guideline policy. In the “charge to the Deacons” we are called as Deacons to “… realize that benevolence is a quality of life in Christ and not merely a matter of financial assistance.” This indicates that Benevolence involves a lifestyle of respect and compassion. It guides us, as Deacons, on how we relate to people in need. A draft document will be presented at our February meeting.

In our last meeting, the Deacons also discussed the many visits that were made to many of our Young at Heart folks over the Christmas season. We hope you were blessed by the visit as much as the Deacon were blessed hearing your stories and your life experiences. The Deacons are also encouraged by the Congregation’s response to our appeal for the clothing bank. Please continue to bring new or gently used “winter clothing” as there is always a need when the weather gets colder.

The Deacons have also been tasked, in the next few months, to consider nominations for new Deacons. So, if you are asked to let your name stand, please prayerfully consider if you have been called to serve in this position at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church.

One last note: If you see or hear of a need in our congregation or in your community, please contact any of the Deacons so we may be of assistance, if we are able.
