2024 Summer Newsletter Excerpt | Weekend of Service

Written by Pastor Steve Berkenpas, Lead Pastor

On Saturday, June 15, members of Living Hope had the opportunity to go out and serve our neighbourhood alongside our brothers and sisters at Gateway CRC. We served in varied places: the Gleaners; landscaping at Tabor Home; and cleaning up invasive ivy in our parks. The weather did not cooperate with our plans, but that did not stop a positive turnout with about 250 people going out to their varied places of service. Doing some simple removing of ivy, I got to reflect on how this was a little prelude of the kingdom of God coming in its fullness – where divisions between churches are no longer a thing – brothers and sisters in Christ can be together serving God to his glory.

The day sparked some great conversations on future opportunities for Living Hope to participate and host some service opportunities in the future. Stay tuned and keep your eyes open for ways that we can be a blessing in our community – as Living Hope and as brothers and sisters in Christ in churches throughout Abbotsford.

A Story of God’s Provision

As we partnered with Gateway on this, we wanted to contribute financially to some of the costs. Unaware of the total budget and funds available, the deacons decided on a number. On the morning of the event Gary Veeneman delivered a cheque. The cheque was exactly the amount that was needed to cover the remainder of the costs for the service opportunities. Praise be to God for the way he works in answering prayers and giving us glimpses into the variety of ways he is at work behind the scenes.
