Confident

In Psalm 27 David is facing adversity, enemies are advancing against him and he’s looking to God as his source of help and comfort. David’s eyes are fixed firmly on God, and despite his difficulties, he expresses that he has found joy through the knowledge of his eternal salvation in heaven with God. This gives him the strength and confidence needed to face his enemies, while living in confident peace that the Lord is on his side.

During this time of twin pandemics, like David, we too are facing a battle. Every day we face social inequality that has lead to systemic racism, and due to COVID-19 we live with the nagging fear of sickness and death. But when we lift our eyes up, and look beyond ourselves, and our world, and the pandemics, and the hardships we are facing, and fix our eyes firmly on God, we will find our hope and our strength in him. This is how we remain confident and positive followers of Christ despite our circumstances.

The song ‘Confident’ is a wonderful paraphrase of Psalm 27. It has been a solid reminder for me to fix my eyes firmly on God, “for he will see me through”. I love how the lyrics line up with this Psalm and so I have shared them below. I pray that they may comfort you and bring you peace, just as they have for me.

Before I call, You know my need

Psalm 27:7 “Hear my voice when I call, Lord; be merciful to me and answer me.”

My soul can rest, my righteousness is found in You

Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”

You lift my head so I can see, all of heaven surrounding me.

Psalm 27: 4 “One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”

Your laughter scatters my enemies, You give me joy for my mourning

Psalm 27: 6 “Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord.”

You’re my hope forever, The Rock where I stand

Psalm 27:5 “For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.

I’m confident Your faithfulness will see me through

Psalm 27:13-14 “I will remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
