He Will Hold Me Fast

This song reminds us that even in times of fear and uncertainty, Christ is holding onto us through it all. Verse one sings about how fear, temptation, and the inconstancy of our love can bring us to a place where our strength is no longer enough to hold on to the promises of God. But after each expression of our failure comes the repeated phrase ‘He will hold me fast’. It is a beautiful reminder that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we no longer have the strength to hold on, when we are tired, irritable, tempted, depressed, it is His strength is what allows us to carry on in the face of hardship. Another Promise of God is found in Hebrews 13:5, that ‘He will never leave us or forsake us’, or as the song puts it, ‘He’ll not let [our] souls be lost’. We can have peace in knowing that ‘justice has been satisfied’ by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. And through believing in Him we have been given the gift of salvation, and the promise that we will be ‘raised with Him to endless life, when He comes at last.’ As a result of these promises we can find hope, knowing that in the meantime, ‘He will hold us fast.’

2 Corinthians 12:9
Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.
